Doctors Unite to Combat Obesity

The Royal Medical Colleges and Faculties (RMCF) have started a campaign to tackle the increasing number of people suffering from obesity. Almost a quarter of the people in the UK are obese and predictions tell that half of the children will be obese by 2020. The RMCF represent 200.000 doctors who unite in this campaign and try to find solutions for this life-threatening problem. The campaign focuses on fat taxes; promoting exercise; restricting food advertisements and sponsorships; which medical procedures work and how to give proper education on the subject. There is no single solution for obese and this campaign tries to encourage a healthier lifestyle to tackle obese.

It’s a good thing that doctors unite in their effort to reduce obesity by a national campaign. The really strong part of the campaign is that they also focus on the restriction in advertisements for the large food companies. This method also worked for smoking. I strongly believe sports events should not be sponsored by food companies at all. It sends the wrong information and people are ignorant about the consequences. Obesity becomes a very serious health problem and not just in the UK. I think it is about time that the influence of major food companies reduces or at least makes way for healthy alternatives.

  1. Not only in the Uk but also in The Netherlands obesity is a problem. I read an article about obesity . Professors of the Amsterdam university Have made a direct link between obesity and dementia. The average age of people with dementia will decline over the coming years. I think the government of the Netherlands has to start a campaign right now to solve the problem.

  2. It is a good thing that the government is addressing this problem. (Unhealthy) food has become too important in our daily life. I think schools should also take more responsibility in this process. The restaurant could stop selling fat food and candies and focus more on nice salads and fruit juices.

  3. Certainly obesity is becoming a problem in the comtenporary society. More and more people are becoming overweight. I wonder how this has happened, which changes in society had this effect on our foodhabits and our weight. Once we have figured this out, I hope we can come to a solution.
I certainly think that schools should take part in making changes, but I also think that it has to do with awareness and helping people in changing their happens.
Either way, something should change, the sooner the better!
