Cost of Olympics
to spiral to £24bn... TEN TIMES higher than 2005 estimate
The cost for the Olympic Games of 2012 could
be ten times higher than the original estimated costs of 2005. This is the financial outcome based on a survey conducted by Sky Sports.
In 2007, the Olympics public sector funding package, which deals with venues,
security, defense and public transport, was already increased to £9.3 billion.
The Sky Sports investigation revealed that extra spends such as anti-doping
control officers and legacy schemes could cause another raise of £2.4 billion
for the English taxpayers. As a sign of protest the Olympic sculpture Jurassic
Stones that cost £399.000, has been blasted by angry residents who believe that
the sculpture is a waste of money in this time of economic meltdown. Despite
the increasing costs and the discussion about it, Sebastian Coe, chairman of
the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, insisted they stay
within the budget of £9.3 billion. Also the spokesman of the Department for
Culture, Media and Sports hit back hard at the Sky investigation and said that
the budget includes all additional security and public provision for the Games
and that the programme remains within the £9.3 bn.
For every country it’s
an honor to be the host of the Olympic Games. It is one of the most prominent
sports events of the world and the sports delegates are treated as heroes.
Every country will do the best they can to impress the world with ceremonies
and all sorts of public events around the Games. People from all over the world
will come to the Olympics and all kinds of measures must be taken for safety,
transport and housing. All these measures will cost a lot of money and a part
of that money comes directly from the taxpayers. I think that’s normal. Eventually
your country will benefit from this because all these people also bring a lot
of money. I agree on the fact that the Organizing Committee should do as much
as possible to reduce the enormous costs made by the artistic sector. Art sculptures in town are nice indeed, but
when costs are raising to a maximum an organizing committee should make better choices.
